Thomas was born in 1791. Thomas Turnham was a licensed victualler who held the Black Horse and later The Crown in Leighton Buzzard, he was also recorded as a butcher. Thomas must have had a hard childhood; a burial record for his sibling says only “un-named infant of Robert Turnham, who was poor”. The previous Black Horse publican had also been a butcher and the premises included “Slaughterhouse, barn, stable and Hogstye with lofts over all. Brewhouse, Fastening Pen, House, Tap House adjoining each other in the yard; all thatched.” Of his children 7 sons and 2 daughter all went on to hold pubs in London. He passed away in 1870. [1]
