Notes

From Elmer Taylor (Ancestory.com) There are three different dates published for Christopher's death: 1) June 23, 1851 by his great-great-great-grandaughter, Mrs. Laurel Litwiller of Roanke, IL; 2) June 3, 1853 by Merle E. Turnipseed by visiting gravesite, 3) June 23, 1854 (source unknown but probably from Ancestral File Index or IGI).

Christopher is buried in the Higgs family section of Indian Field Cemetery, McLean County, Illinois. The cemetery is in the middle of the section south of Lexington. It is unkept and a mess with head high weeds/brush.

In August 1997, I wrote for a copy of his will or probate records. There was only an Administration on file with basically no useful date proving the descendants (children) of Christopher. Family names included in the bill of sales are: Isaac Turnipseed (son), Jackson Turnipseed, Rebecca Turnipseed (wife), James Berry, Jackson Armstrong (who is enumerated with Chrisotpher on the 1850 census), Samuel McMullen, Josiah Flesher, and Joseph McNaught.

Christopher served in the War of 1812 from Ross County, Ohio in Anderson Hemphill's Company. The Hemphills were from the Buckskin-Concord area of Ross County which is the same area where Jacob and John Turnipseed families lived. In 1820 Ohio Census, Christopher is enumerated in Fayette County as follows:

Male: 1 aged 26-45; 1 aged 10-16, 1 under 10. Female: 1 aged 26-45, 1 aged 16-26, 2 aged 10-16, 4 under 10 In 1850, he is enumerated in the Illinois census as living in McLean County, South Mackinaw side as follows: Christ. Turnipseed, age 60, farmer, born Penn. Rebecca Turnipseed, age 40, born Ohio. Rachel Turnipseed, age 1, born Illinois Jackson Armstrong, age 21, laborer, born Ohio At this time, we do not know if Jackson is related to Christopher or Rebecca. However, we do know that Christopher was Jackson's guardian per a document in Fayette County, OH on May 23, 1831. On this same census page right above Christopher and Rebecca are two of Christopher's sons: Christopher and John.

From: "The Turnipseed Family Genealogy Forum" on Genealogy Forum" by Kathy Scott Jackson Armstrong's (1829-1901) parents are unknown at this time. Court records in Fayette Co., Ohio of May 23, 1831 name Jackson Armstrong's guardian as Christopher Turnipseed (about 1790-1854). Christopher Turnipseed's 1st wife was Mary "McMullen" Turnipseed (about 1794-1840). It is not known if there was any family connection at that time to Christopher & Mary "McMullen" Turnipseed & Jackson Armstrong.

Christopher & Mary's son, John Turnipseed (about 1815- ), & wife, Mary "Todd" Turnipseed (about 1824- ), were the parents of Phebe Turnipseed (about 1829- ). Phebe became the wife of Jackson Armstrong on July 26, 1856 in McLean Co., Ohio.

The 1850 Federal Census, McLean Co., South Mackinaw side, Illinois lists as follows: Christ Turnipseed, age 60, farmer, born in Pennsylvania. Rebecca Turnipseed, age 40, born in Illinois. Rachel Turnipseed, age 1, born in Illinois. Jackson Armstrong, age 21, laborer, born in Ohio. Christopher Turnipseed (Jr.) (1821-1882, John Turnipseed (about 1815- ).

Christopher Turnipseed (about 1790-1854) has an Administration after his death on file in the McLean Co., Illinois Court House. Included in the bill of sales are: Isaac Turnipseed (son), Jackson Turnipseed, Rebecca Turnipseed (3rd wife of Christopher Turnipseed, Sr.), James Berry, Jackson Armstrong, Samuel McMullen, Josiah Flesher, & Joseph McNaught. No will was found.

The above information is from "Pheobe T. m Solomon Asbury Files" posted in "The Turnipseed Family Genealogy Forum" on Gen Forum. It was posted by Kathy Scott on Mar. 19, 2000.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Christopher by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Christopher:

Turnipseed-41 and Turnipseed-37 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicates.
Does anybody have a source that say Jacob is the father of Christopher Turnipseed?
