Birth

Private Francis Turnley served with Spotsylvania County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

Francis Turnley is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A117361.

Francis Turnley was born on 31 Dec 1762 in Spotsylvania, Virginia Colony.[1] He was a son of Francis Turnley and Mary Turnley.

Military Service

He was eighteen when, on Oct 1780, he was drafted to serve under Captain Croucher in the Spottsylvania County Militia. He was discharged at Petersburg; then drafted for a second tour, under Captain Frank Coleman, serving at Fredericksburg. In the third tour, under Captain Tankersley, he was in the fight at Osbornes and at the surrender of Cornwallis. His total service was ten months.[2] He was allowed a pension for his service.[3]

Marriage and Children

On 2 Feb 1791, he married Susan Walls in Orange County, Virginia.[4] Francis and Susan Turnley had at least two children:

  • John, m. Malinda Castle[1]
  • James, m. Mahala Cosby[1]

Census

The 1810 census lists Francis as a head of household in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.[5]

Death

Francis Turnley passed away on 18 Dec 1836 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.[1]

Research Notes

He is listed as "Frank Turnley" on the death certificate for his son John in 1865.[6]
