Biography

James Turvey was born in 1837 in Mursley, Buckinghamshire, England to William Turvey and Elizabeth (Harding) Turvey.

In 1841 James Turvey (age 4) lived in Whitchurch, Buckinghamshire with his mother's relatives John & Hannah Harding.[1] His parents and siblings lived in Mursley With Salden.

In 1851 James Turvey (age 13, Crow Keeper/Plow Boy) lived in Mursley with his father William (46, Ag Lab), mother Elizabeth (47, Lacemaker), and six siblings: George (20, Ag Lab), Mary (18, Plaiter), Jane (16, Plaiter), Ann (11, Plaiter), Eliza (9, Scholar), and Alfred (3, Scholar), as well as cousin Charles Colyer (13, Plow Boy).[2]

James Turvey married Emma Hedges in 1861. The marriage was registered in Winslow in the first quarter of the year.[3]

James and Emma had five children:

  2. Elizabeth Emily (Turvey) (Healey) Roads (1864-1916)
  3. George William Turvey (1867-)
  4. Eva Anne "Annie" (Turvey) Roads (1869-1930)
  5. Ethel Caroline (Turvey) Cattran (1882-1968)

In 1861 James Turvey (age 23, Agricultural Labourer) lived in Mursley.[4] His wife Emma Turvey (23, Plaiter) and daughter Mary Turvey (23[0]) were staying with Emma's father George Hedges in Stewkley, Buckinghamshire.

In 1871 James Turvey (age 33, Farm Labourer) lived in Mursley with his wife Emma (33, Straw Plaiter) and four children: Mary (10, Straw Plaiter), Elizabeth (6, Straw Plaiter), George (4), and Annie (1).[5]

In 1881 James Turvey (age 43, Ag Lab) lived in Mursley with his wife Emma (43), son George W (14, Ag Lab), and daughter Eva A (11).[6]

In 1891 James Turvey (age 53, Agricultural Labourer) lived in Mursley with his wife Emma (53).[7] Their youngest daughter Ethel Caroline Turvey (8, Scholar) lived with their married daughter Eva Ann Roads (22) and her husband Joseph Roads (24, Carter Coal) in Swanbourne, Buckinghamshire.

James' wife passed away in 1895.

In 1901 James Turvey (age 63, General Labourer) lived in Mursley with his son-in-law Joseph Roads (54[34], Foreman in Coal Yard), daughter Eva Annie Roads (32), and four Roads grandchildren: William J (8), Florence E (5), Reginald J (3), and Lawrence D (1).[8]

James Turvey passed away in 1911, aged 73 years. His death was registered in Winslow in the first quarter of the year.[9]
