George Alfred John Turvey, also known as John George Alfred Turvey [1] or simply John Turvey, was born in around 1836, the son of George Turvey, a Sheriff Officer.[1]
He was tried at Clerkenwell sessions, in Middlesex, on 11 May 1857 and convicted of embezzlement and receiving stolen goods. [2] He was sentenced to 4 years transportation to Australia. [3] He arrived in Western Australia on the ship Sultana on 19 August 1859 with 223 other convicts on board. [1]
On arrival he was described as "stout, five foot 2.25 inches tall, brown hair, grey eyes, round face and fair complexion". His occupation was listed as a farm labourer and he was single with no children. His distinguishing marks included a sailor flag and anchor on his left arm and "J T" tatooed on his right arm.[4]
He got a ticket to leave on 17 Feb 1860. [5] He remained in Western Australia, marrying Jane Derry on 8 August 1866 in York. [6]
