Biography

More than half a century ago I was born at the old Charleston, SC Naval hospital just a little before 0700. Dad tried to stay overnight with Mom but back then they didn't let Fathers stay for the birth. Dad told me that some big old nurse put her arm around him and started walking him down the hall as they talked. She let him go through the door first and then closed it behind him. All of a sudden he realized he was outside on the fire escape.

We moved around more than most civilians but less than most military families. In our travels I have seen many historical sites from Quebec City, Canada to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and some others out West. My parents always took extra time when we traveled so I could accidentally learn something.

After my Father retired from the US Coast Guard we settled down and after graduating High School I began my own military career. First the Coast Guard then the Navy. But, I came home (they should have realized I wouldn't go away forever.) For the last 18 years I have been a corrections officer with the state of South Carolina.

Got married twice. The first lasted two years the second twenty-four years and counting. I only have one living biological child, but hundreds of children and young adults call me Uncle John. I started volunteering with the Sons of Confederate Veterans at reenactments and summer camps with my nieces and nephews who would introduce me as Uncle John so the name stuck. Even the other adults call me this.

I love history (more accurately military history), scuba, trains, woodworking, Lego's and a lot of other junque (the sophisticated spelling of junk.)

Hi ,

Now that you have had a little time to try WikiTree, there are a few more features you may find useful.

Ideas on what to include in a profile can be found in Styles and Standards, including some tips on writing biographies.

If you need to describe an event, an heirloom or a location relevant to your research, you may like to learn about Free Space Profiles.

Lastly, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving those unfortunate situations.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask via my profile page.

Well, now it is time to put my tail between my legs and fix my screw ups. I got in too big of a hurry and duplicated several entries instead of just linking to them. I trusted the auto-suggest to work but it didn't so I just wasted time and assets.

Well, I just linked my line to Capt Thomas (Ellerbe-13) Ellerbe under General Francis Marion in the Revolutionary War. He was my G6 - Grand Father.

Much information has been gathered by my Great-Aunt Ms. Vivian Christine Prince. She has written several books and my Mother, Mary Eloise (Strother) Tuten has assisted in at least two of these books.

Hi!

How are you? I'm Shirley, a WikiTree Mentor. Hope you're enjoying our site.

How To Use WikiTree is a good starting point, and the Help Index is an important place to find out how to do most tasks.

If you have pre-1700's ancestors to add please read our Pre-1700 profiles info. Do you have Royal Ancestors? Rather than create duplicate profiles for them, please contact the EuroAristo Project to discuss connecting your family line to their profiles.

And I'm here to help too, just ask!

Shirley ~ WikiTree Mentor

My family is from South Carolina and we have several members who are quite active in documenting our genealogy. I can verify my lineage to the 1700's. I am a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and am eligible to be a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
