Biography

John Tuttle was baptized on 25 Jan 1736, at The Hamlet Parish Church in Ipswich, Essex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay. He was the son of Charles Tuttle, Jr., and Ann Jewett.[1] No record of John's birth date seems to have survived, but his recorded death when he was 91 years old,on 8 Dec 1827 (see below), suggests that he was baptized shortly after birth.

Marriage and Family

John and Mehitable Jewett published their intention to marry in Ipswich on 24 Mar 1761.[2] They were married there on 22 Apr 1761, at the South Church.[3] They registered the births or baptisms of seven children in Ipswich:

  1. Simon Tuttle (b. 26 Feb 1762)[4]
  2. Mehitable Tuttle (b. 24 Jul 1765)[5]
  3. Anna Tuttle (b. 29 Apr 1771)[6]
  4. Ruth Tuttle (b. 14 May 1772;[7] d. 7 Oct 1774, age 2 1/2, "canker fever," Ipswich)[8]
  5. John Tuttle (bp. 7 Aug 1774, The Hamlet Parish Church, Ipswich;[9] d. 20 Jun 1775, age 10 months, "canker fever," Ipswich)[10]
  6. John Tuttle (bp. 15 Nov 1778, The Hamlet Parish Church, Ipswich)[11]
  7. Ruth Tuttle (bp. 17 Jun 1781, The Hamlet Parish Church, Ipswich)[12]

Military Service: American Revolution

John Tuttle of Ipswich responded with the Ipswich militia to the Lexington Alarm of 19 Apr 1775. He marched, as a private in Col. James Patch's company, from Ipswich Hamlet (the portion of Ipswich which later became the town of Hamilton) to Mystic (possibly Mystic in New London County, Connecticut Colony, although this is farther from Ipswich than his travel allowance warranted), serving four days and allowed 48 miles of travel.[13]

Death

John Tuttle died of "lung fever" at the age of 91, on 26 Dec 1827, in Hamilton, Essex Couty, Massachusetts.[14] His gravestone in the Hamilton Cemetery in Hamilton is an example of those provided by the United States government to commemorate documented soldiers of the American Revolution.[15] It was applied for by the Board of Selectmen of the town of Hamilton to mark an unmarked grave in the Hamilton town cemetery on 24 Mar 1937.[16]

Mehitable (Jewett) Tuttle died about seven years later, at the age of 94, on 8 Dec 1834, in Hamilton, Essex County, Massachusetts.[17]

Research Notes

Date of Marriage: The record of the intention to marry carries a date of 24 Mar 1765, in the published transcript[18] but, since their first child, Simon, was born 26 Feb 1762, it is highly probable the 1761 date is correct and the 1765 date a misreading or later transcription error. This is supported by the 20th-century, handwritten transcript of the Ipswich town records, which lists the intention among those of 1761, although the transcript's page is damaged, so that the precise year is missing (see citation above).
