Biography

Richard was born about 1593, (aged 42 at migration) probably in Ringstead, Northamptonshire, England; the son of Simon and Isabel (Wells) Tuttle of Ringstead, Northamptonshire. His brothers were John Tuttle of Ipswich by 1635 and William Tuttle of Charlestown by 1635.[1]

Richard married Anne Taylor at Barnwell St. Andrew, co. Northhampton, England on 19 Jun 1622.[1]He was churchwarden of Ringstead, Northamtonshire in 1626, 1629. [2]

Richard sailed from England on the ship Plantation on April 2, 1635, with his brother William Tuttle, their widowed mother Isabel (Wells) Tuttle, with their wives and children, and their cousin John Tuttle and his family. [2]Enrolled as passengers at London were Richard Tuttell aged 42, Ann Tuttell aged 41, Anna Tuttell aged 12, John Tuttell aged 10, and Rebecca Tuttell aged 6; along with Isabell Tuttell aged 70.[1]No records have been found in New England for Isabell Tuttle.[1]

Richard's occupation was "husbandman." He became a member of the church of Boston, along with his wife, on December 27, 1635 and was made freeman on March 3, 1635/6. His education is not known, but education was important to him and his wife for he contributed 10s "towards the maintenance of a free schoolmaster for the youth with us." He was a Boston selectman in 1636 and Constable in November 5, 1638.[1]

His land holdings were extensive, 4 parcels at Rumney Marsh comprising at least 344 acres that were continuous with one another. He was "one of fourteen prominent Boston citizens" (quote from Great Migration, p. 136.) who sold a warf, crane and warehouse in Boston to Richard Parker.[1]
