ORAL HISTORY: per Joel Sampson Smith (uncle of Willie Fay), and Willie herself:
Willie Faye said she'd been married, legally, 16 times, widowed 12 times and divorced 4 times. She gave up and took a domestic partner some years younger than herself.
She said she'd had one child, stillborn, and buried in Reno, Washoe Co, NV.
Willie said one of her grooms died when struck by lightning, they'd just stepped from the car and were greeting friend when the lightning struck. Another one died when, after their wedding night in a hotel, they stepped out the front door and he was gunned down by "business rivals" on the steps of the hotel.
Papa said Willie had been at one time or another a bronc buster and a camp cook.
Willie said she'd gotten married the first time when she was hot to get out of the family home and told her mother she was "in trouble". In THOSE days that meant marriage was due.
Willie Fay swore up and down she'd been married legally 16 times, divorced four of those, and was widowed the other 12 times. Said she could even swear on it in court if she had to. It is said there are 11 Western states -- Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada; Washington, Oregon, California. When you consider she'd been in over half of those states judging from what she DID say, there's no way was I going to try to locate 16 marriages.
And then there's Alaska
Willie Fay held jobs ranging from bronc buster to trail cook to hotel manager to whatever .... her career was eclectic as that of my father, Joel. She was of an age with my mother and one of the few times I saw my mother prance and sashay is when she danced up, cooing and trilling "Willie Fay!!" to give WIllie Fay a big hug after many years apart. Shocked me, I didn't know Mama ever acted like that.
