Biography

Phebe Tuttle was "of Falmouth," Cumberland, Province of Maine per her record of marriage intention (marriage to William Flye aka Fly) filed on September 24, 1748 in Falmouth. Her birth year is estimated to be about 1729. Family Trees report her birth year as 1729 and place of birth North Yarmouth Plantation, Cumberland, Province of Maine, Massachusetts Bay.

Phebe and William had at least five children including Hannah b. 1748; William C. b. 1750; James b. 1752; Jonathan b. 1754; and Elizabeth b. 1760. About the year 1768, William and Phebe removed to Ellsworth, Hancock County, Province of Maine.

William's household is recorded in the 1790 Federal Census record for Hancock County, Township 6. His household includes 1 male over 16 (self) and 3 females, one of whom is assumed to be wife Phebe. [Note: Township 6 was incorporated as Surry, Maine in 1803. Part of the town was also set off to Ellsworth in 1809, reclaimed by Surry in in 1821, then re-annexed by Ellsworth in 1829.]

By 1800, William and Phebe removed to Sedgwick, Hancock, and lived next to their son, James. In the 1800 Federal Census for Sedgwick, Hancock, Province of Maine, William is listed head of household with two members, himself and 1 female, both over age 45. These two household members are assumed to be William (self) and wife Phebe.

Phebe reportedly passed away on March 11, 1806 a few months before her husband passed away in same year. William reportedly died a widower on August 20, 1806 in Ellsworth, Province of Maine, but these dates and locations of death need to be confirmed and until then they are considered approximate. What is known is that per the 1800 Census record William and Phebe were living in Sedgwick, Hancock, and neighbors to their son James.
