Twining, born in Essex, had lived with his wife, Pat, in the East Yorkshire village since moving to the north 41 years ago. He worked in the chief signals and telecommunications engineers’ department for British Rail for 45 years. His work included helping to design level crossings. Along with Richard Hobson and Ken Wright, he helped to reform the Sutton-on-Derwent village tennis club in 1970. He was then secretary and later treasurer before retiring from the committee at the end of last year. In 2007, Twining cut the ribbon at the official opening of new tennis courts at the club, pictured right. Twining played in the club’s first team for some years and later switched to golf, playing regularly at The Oaks Golf Club. He leaves wife Pat, daughter Sarah and sons Robert and John. A memorial service will be held at Michael and All Angels Church, Sutton-on-Derwent, on Wednesday, September 23, at 12.30pm.
