John was born in 1848. He is the son of John Tyler and Julia Gardiner.

John is listed on the Appomattox Surrender Roster of the Rockbridge Artillery. John, while in Europe, joined the First Uhlan Regiment in the German army during the Franco-Prussian war, winning the badge of honor from the Emperor. Married his cousin Sarah Griswold Gardiner, August 5, 1875. President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him as a surveyor for the United States Department of the Interior. He died of a fever in New Mexico in 1883 while working as a mining engineer.

Epitaph: While a mere youth of sixteen joined the fortunes of his native State and became a member of the First Virginia Battalion of Artillery under the command of Gen Robert E Lee. Although enduring great privation & hardship, which he bore with uncomplaining fortitude, he served until the close of the Civil War and was then paroled at Appomattox Court House in 1865. He went to Europe where he remained for eight years, first as a student at Carlsruhe, Baden and afterward at Freiberg, Saxony where he graduated as mining and civil engineer, while at the latter place he entered the German Army by Special permit as a volunteer in the first Uhlan Regiment under the command of Prince John of Saxony and was actively engaged during the Franco Prussian War of 1870-71. Receiving at the close a decoration from the hands of the Emperor William I for gallant and distinguished services.
