Biography

Hopestill Tyler Jr. was born on October 26, 1685, in Andover, Massachusetts, to Hopestill Tyler Sr. and Mary Lovett Tyler. (His mother Mary and sisters had been accused of witchcraft and were imprisoned during the Salem witchcraft trials. Not long after that, his father moved the family to Preston, Connecticut.)

As Willard I. Tyler Brigham[1] has written about Hopestill Junior, "He lived in Preston, Connecticut, where his children were born and with his wife was buried there."

Hopestill came to his life well-endowed by his father, Hopestill Senior, who bequeated to him 'All my Land In the township of preston, with all my housing and shope tols'. Hopestill Jr. was a co-executor of his father's will.

Although Hopestill Jr. had the "tols" (tools) he did not seem to take to the 'smithing' trade of his father.

Hopestill Jr. was contented in working his farm in Preston, Connecticut, at least a portion of its surface being"sufficiently rocky and stony to need more than ordinary attention."
