Biography

This Laurence Tyler as the father of the New England Immigrant Job Tyler was published in the NEGHR in 1961.[1] He was identified by his will who named his son Jobe Tyler "who is now in New England." Previous theories that Job came from Shropshire are therefore disproved.
His will names children Job, John, Moses, Rebecca and Mary. The baptisms of John (maybe), Job and Moses are found at Cranbrook, Kent, England. Another daughter Abigail was called a daughter of Laurence Tyler in her marriage and burial record and has long been presumed to be a daughter of this Laurence Tyler. This has been confirmed by the discovery of her baptism at Frittendon, four miles from Cranbrook, which names both of her parents. Also baptized at Frittenden was her sister Rebecca, named in Laurence's will. The Frittenden baptisms also led to the discovery of two more sons baptized there, Aaron and Joseph. These two sons were not named in their father's will and are presumed to have died young.

Name and Origins

Name: Laurence Tyler
of Cranbrook, Kent, England and of Frittenden, Kent, England.

Birth

Born: About 1585 (1580 to 1590).
Estimate based on birth of son in 1610. If his first child was Job, then a date range of 1585 to 1595 would be more reasonable.
It is commonly found on the internet that he was born or baptized on Jan. 10, 1593 in Cranbrook, Kent, England. However, a search of parish records have found no corresponding entry to support either the date or the place of birth. Even a date of 'About 1593' which was previously used on this profile and by FAG is likely too late. His parents, birth date, and birth place are all unknown and remain to be proven.

Marriage and Children

Married: Dorothy Unknown about 1609.
Estimate based on birth of first known child in June 1610. If their first child was Job then a date of about 1616 would be more reasonable.
Children of Lawrence and Dorothy Tyler:
  1. John Tyler. Baptized on 24 Jun 1610 in Cranbrook, Kent, England.[2] No father is listed in this baptism record but he is often presumed to be the son named in the will of Laurence Tyler. However, this baptism date may be too early and it appears from the will of Laurence Tyler that Job was the oldest son; this baptism may belong to a different Tyler family.
  2. Job Tyler. Baptized on 12 Oct 1617 in Cranbrook. Register does not list father.[3] No father is listed in this baptism record but he is presumably the son named in the will of Laurence Tyler.
  3. Moses Tyler. Baptized on 30 Jan 1619/20 in Cranbrook.[4] He is called the son of Lawrence Tyler in his baptism record.
  4. Rebecca Tyler. Baptized on 8 September 1622 in Frittenden, Kent, England.[5] Named in the will of her father Laurence Tyler as Rebecca Page.
  5. Aaron Tyler. Baptized on 3 April 1625 in Frittenden.[6] He was buried on 23 August 1628 in Frittendon.[7]
  6. Joseph Tyler. Baptized on 20 July 1628 in Frittenden.[8] He was not named in the will of his father.
  7. Mary Tyler. Born say 1630. A Mary Tyler was baptized on 13 Nov 1603 in Cranbrook.[9] No father is listed in this baptism record and she is often said to be the daughter named in the will of Laurence Tyler. However this date seems too early to fit in with the rest of her siblings and the Mary Tyler with this baptism date may belong to a different family. Mary Tyler was also the second daughter named in the will of Laurence Tyler indicating she may be the younger daughter (this may not be true as it was actually her children who received bequests and not Mary herself). The will of Laurence Tyler would also indicate her children were all born between 1650 and 1660 making it unlikely that the 1603 baptism is her.
  8. Abigail Tyler. Baptized on 28 February 1636 in Frittenden.[10] Buried 20 January 1656(7?) in Cranbrook and called a daughter of Lawrence Tyler.[11] She married Richard Bayley on 15 May 1655 where she is also called a daughter of Lawrence Tyler.[12] They had a daughter Abigail Bayley/Bexley baptized on 28 December 1656 in Cranbrook.[13] Though the will of Laurence Tyler names grandchildren by his daughter Mary, he did not name any grandchildren by Abigail. However, the fact that her baptism names both her mother and father helps confirm her as a daughter of this Laurence Tyler.

Death

Died: Shortly before 14 March 1663/4
Buried: 17 March 1663/4 at All Saints Church Cemetery in Staplehurst, Kent. England.[15][16]
If his will was proved on 14 March 1663/4 and he was buried on 17 March 1663/4, he must have died very shortly before 14 March 1663/4. Supporting the fact that the burial is for this Laurence Tyler is that his will names his friend Mr. John Stephens of Staplehurst, though in his will he describes himself as "of Cranbrook, co. Kent."
Will: Laurence Tyler of Cranbrook, co. Kent, yeoman, “being aged and weak in body,” made his will on 10 Jan.1663 “in our English computacon.” My son Jobe Tyler “who is now in New England” shall make, seal and send over a sufficient release of all his right, interest and title he or his heirs may have in a piece of land that I lately purchased of Thomas Everiss of Staplehurst, wherein I joined him as purchasor with myself. For now I give the same piece of land with the house and barn newly erected thereon with a garden and other parcel of land adjoining thereto to my daughter Rebecca Page and her heirs for ever. In lieu of this I give to my said son Jobe Tyler £40. To my son John Tyler, £10. To my son Moses Tyler, £40. To my daughter Mary Potter’s five children £100, namely to Mary Potter £20 on 25 Dec. 1672, to James Potter £20 on 25 Dec. 1677, to Jobe Potter £20 on 25 Dec. 1681, to John Potter £20 on 25 Dec. 1682, and to Thomas Potter £20 on 25 Dec. 1684. Residue to Dorothy my wife, and Mary Potter, my daughter, whom I make executrices. They are to have the advice and consent of my two friends Mr. Harmone Sheaf of Cranbrook and Mr. John Stephens of Staplehurst, clothiers, whom I make my overseers.
Witnesses: Darthy Bayly, Elizabeth Hodgkin, Richard Kingsnoth. Proved 14 March 1663. (Consistory Court of Canterbury, 32/53/201.)[17][18]

Common Errors to Avoid

  • Parents: He was previously connected to Laurence Tyler of Shropshire and Ellen Sale as his parents. This seems to be a combination of the Shropshire origins theory and the Kent origins theory. No evidence has been found to support these parents and they are extremely unlikely. They have been disconnected. His parents and baptism remain unidentified.
  • Also disconnected as parents are Laurence Tyler and Joan Ellis. This couple can also be found as the parents of the PGM immigrant Job Tyler. They are internet nonsense with no evidence to support any claims made.

Thanks for maintaining this profile! I noticed that in the searchable film of Frittenden, about 4 miles from Cranbrook, Abigail "Tiler" appears with both parents named, Laurence and Dorothea. The link showing "Laurence Tiler" children in Frittenden is this: https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?givenname=Laurence&surname=Tiler&film_number=1736721&count=50&offset=0

That also lists Rebecca (1622), Joseph (1628) and 2 Aarons (one baptized 1625, one 1628) but these with only father Laurence Tiler listed. Joseph and one Aaron are only a month apart but since these are baptisms, they could all still belong to the same Laurence. Unfortunately deaths and most marriages don't get indexed as much as baptisms so no further hits come up for this family. Just wanted to point this out in case somebody has access to the images at a LDS family history center.

Very nice Brad.

One of your two Aarons is actually a burial and not baptism so we have no problem birth dates being too close together.

The profile already shows a daughter Rebecca named in the will of Laurence Tyler, but for whom no baptism had been found in research on the family. Her guestimated birth date of about 1622 fits perfectly with the baptism date of 8 September 1622 that you found.

The profile also has Abigail Tyler as a probable daughter of this Laurence Tyler based on her being called a daughter of Laurence in her burial and marriage records. The main concern being neither she nor any of her children were named in the will of Laurence Tyler. Now that we have a baptism record which also correctly names her mother, I think we can call her a confirmed daughter.

Neither Aaron or Joseph appear in the will of Laurence Tyler. However, since the baptisms Abigail and Rebecca so perfectly match what we know, I think it is safe to say they are all children of Laurence and Dorothy Tyler. And that Laurence Tyler of Frittendon is the same person as Laurence Tyler of Cranbrook.

I am updating the profile to match the Frittenden records. There can be little doubt Laurence Tyler of Frittendon is the same person as Laurence Tyler of Cranbrook.

Suggestion:

Perhaps we could move the list of erroneous parents now disconnected out of the 'Name and Origins' section at the top of the page, down into the 'Common Errors to Avoid' section at the bottom of the page?

That way if someone clicks on the index link, and jumps down the page, they will see ALL the errors we're trying to eradicate.

Hello Tyler folks,

Thanks for all your work on this profile. It sounds like it's been a doozy to figure out and keep tidy!

I notice a few minor self-inconsistencies present, perhaps as a result of past merges and partial clean-up:

1a) We are publishing his birthdate as '10 Jan 1593 Cranbrook, Kent.' But...

1b) In the bio, we say explicitly ALL of that is false. That's what I mean by self-inconsistency. If the info is wrong, then it's wrong, right?

2a) In the bio blurb text, we assert he married his wife Dorothy NN about 1609. (Implication: his bride was about 14... if we know what her birthday was.)

2b) But, in the profiles data their first child is born Oct 1617, eight years after the notional wedding date. That's initially plausible for a child bride. But, their last child born was about 1644. That's problematic, because fully 35 years after the wedding! She would have been 50. While not biologically impossible, the timeline is chronologically unlikely. This would all be less improbable if her birthdate (and her husband's birthdate) hadn't been adjusted backward, without apparent sourcing. Is her birth/wedding date a "hangover" from an undone merge?

3a) In the bio, we say this man was born about 1585 (1580-1590) but based merely on the notional birth of a (now disconnected?) son John in 1610. But...

3b) In the structured data, we show his first son as Job, born in 1617. So I worry someone just made up the notional 1609 marriage date, to pre-date the notional 1610 birth of his now-missing son-- the same way we made up this man's birthdate, based on that son. Or perhaps worse, I worry the critically-important first son* (notional-John 1610, and his sister Mary 1603) may have been wrongly removed.

Anybody know which?

4) More trivial: we vary between Lawrence and Laurence spellings. Do the sources? What is the contemporary source for spelling it L-a-u, if his children's near-contemporary documents used L-a-w? I wonder if the Lau- spelling was introduced when this profile was linked to a false dad Laurence, since disconnected?

Thoughts?

Joe, you could have detached the parents during the merge process.

I'll detach them and repropose the merge.

Is there any evidence that the Wm Tyler Sr attached here as the youngest child is the William Tyler who takes the oath of fidelity at New Haven in 1657 and married Abigail Terrell? Several sources believe the William Tyler of New Haven was from Devonshire although that is not documented.
