Biography

In 1859 Gertrude married Charles Carow. Charles benefited greatly from the business success of his brother-in-law, Robert Kermit, who took the younger Charles as a partner and established the Kermit & Carow shipping company. After Kermit’s death, Charles continued the business and the ships sailed under his name. Charles and Gertrude had one daughter, who was given the name Edith Kermit Carow to recognize their relationship with Robert. Carow’s ship, West Point, carried goods to Liverpool in England and returned with passengers. During the California Gold Rush in the 1840s and 50s Carow made his fortune. But in 1861 everything changed when the American Civil War began, which caused a drastic reduction in the number of emigrants. The American merchant fleet generally was badly affected by this war. A ruinous rise in prices caused significant business setbacks and Charles began to drink. Beset by severe alcoholism and a serious fall and concussion, his success began to rapidly fade. Not much is known of his later years.

The following section is an excerpt from the book, '15 Generations of American Stories: Notable Descendants of Immigrant Job Tyler (Norman Tyler, 2019):

Although the Job Tyler lineage may or may not be directly related to that of President John Tyler, there is a well-documented relationship through marriage to another United States president. Gertrude Elizabeth Tyler (#3386; Tyler-852) in her book, The Story of Gertrude Tyler and Her Family, 1660¬–1860, describes family relationships through many generations, from immigrant Job Tyler seven generations before through to her daughter, Edith Kermit Carow, who would marry President Teddy Roosevelt.

Gertrude Tyler came from a distinguished line of Tyler men. From Job and Hopestill, her line included four Daniels, with her father the fourth Daniel [#462; Tyler-1038]. All four Daniels lived in Wyndham County, Connecticut, in the little town of Brooklyn.

Little is known of Gertrude’s great-great-grandfather, the first Daniel. He inherited land in Groton, Connecticut, from his father, Hopestill, including the section referred to as “Tyler Hill.” Gertrude’s great-grandfather, Daniel II was a house builder and designer, what today would be an architect. The story is told of him that, when over eighty years old he walked the ridge-pole of a church still standing in Brooklyn, Connecticut, which he was constructing. He was born in 1699 and died in 1800. It is rumored that the revenues of worthy local citizens were largely augmented by participation in the slave-trade, which was then considered perfectly reputable and legitimate. In the days of Gertrude’s great-grandfather, Daniel II, slavery flourished in Connecticut, and he once told her that he had often seen older slaves that once belonged to him.

Living in true patriarchal style, he had (in due succession!) three wives, twenty-one children, fifty grandchildren and one hundred and twenty great-grandchildren. The majority of this offspring was grouped around him when he died. On his tombstone he caused to be engraved:

Although a hundred years I’ve seen,

My life was short,

‘Twas all a dream.

Gertrude’s grandfather, Daniel Tyler III, (#462; Tyler-1039) was a graduate of Harvard College in 1771 and soon after that time married Mehitabel Putnam, the daughter of General Israel Putnam. It is said that Daniel III’s father, hearing of his intention to join the army, presented him with a deed of a fine farm so he might provide home and maintenance for his young family. When the war of the revolution broke out, Daniel accompanied General Putnam to the field and was Adjutant of his regiment. After serving for two years with this regiment, Daniel III raised and equipped at his own expense an artillery company then known as “matrosses.” He commanded it with the rank of Major, and was stationed at one time in Newport, Rhode Island, to assist in the defense of the city, which at that time was an important seaport and had more commerce than New York or Boston.

Gertrude’s father, Daniel IV, was a successful soldier and industrialist with many credits to his name. His full biography was presented in a previous chapter.
