Biography

Adelia was a large, tall, brunette type of woman with ambition, a characteristic to be desired and was well informed on the local community events and gossip. She had one son, Jesse Ladue Tyner and later married Frank Smith who she subsequently divorced. This is the statement made in Mayme Tyner's 1981 book, written 10 years after Adelia died, and so couched in Mayme's polite language. As a young boy visiting my grandfather Mack Tyner Sr. at his home built in 1930 on the west side of highway 85, about 1/2 mile south of the junction with SR 2 which starts at 85 and runs due west towards Yellow River and Baker, I would often see Aunt Adelia walk down the highway to visit. She lived about a hundred yards north of the Junction on 85, also west of the highway, In the old house where William Henry Tyner (1848-1925) had lived. Adelia had a speech impediment, and it was difficult for me to understand what she said, but the other family members were used to her speech patterns and could understand her just fine. My grandparents had gotten electricity about 1935, but did not own any electric fans and of course no A/C, so it was very hot in summer, so everyone would sit on long wooden benches outside under the big red oak trees to talk. We would fan ourselves and chew sugar cane, eat watermelon or boiled peanuts. Adelia always wore a long cotton dress. She had very little education as was the norm in the 1900 time frame when she was school age. About 1962 I got very interested in genealogy, and inquired of all the relatives about the family history. That summer my family drove to Boulder Colorado with a travel trailer that we lived in for 3 months while my father worked at the University there. I had visited and talked to Adelia on the trip out to Colorado, and when we got to Colorado, Adelia wrote me letter in pencil which I will scan as an image on her profile. Her handwriting surprised me, it was much better than her speech:

Dear Mack, June 27, 1962 I don't know what my Mother Mother name was only she was a Revel. (Caroline Mozell Revell) Mother never told me her other name she married a man name Thomas Caylor and had two childrens Mother and a brother name Joe she died when Mother was two years old and her brother was four months old I don't know any dates at all. Love Aunt Adelia.

My grandmother, who did not drive, had ridden from West Florida with us to Colorado and stayed a few weeks with us there, then took the bus home.
