Biography

Mary Ann Tyre (1853-1886) was born in Wemyss Bay, Renfrew, Scotland to John Tyre and Jane Stitt. She was the eldest of eleven children, in what appears to be a close-knit, caring family, which had lived in the Greenock, Scotland area for many generations. She married William Henry Blake, a ship's carpenter originally from Ireland, living and working in Greenock. The couple settled there and had fours sons: Edward, David Ferguson, Arthur Albert, and John Tyre. Tragically, Mary Ann died only a few months after her youngest child was born; the child also died a few weeks later. Both Mary Ann and her infant son are buried in the Tyre Family Plot, Loch Thom Cemetery, in Inverkip, Scotland. Mary Ann’s husband William Henry Blake remarried, and emigrated to Canada with their three surviving sons.

Mary Anne was a cousin to Wm Henry Blake. Her family (cousins) lived in North Winnipeg. There were three boys in the family: John Tyre wrote a book "Saddleback Doctor". Information provided by Margaret Tyre (Mary Ann's cousin???) lived 2 doors from Tom Blake's mother in Dryden. She married Doug Hensel.[1]Note: at this time, no evidence has been found to support the theory that William Henry Blake and his wife Mary Ann were cousins (Feb 2021).
