Biography
Carolyn was born in Lansing, Michigan, but moved with her family to the town of Ishpeming, Michigan when she was 10 years old. Ishpeming was located next to Negaunee, MIchigan which is where her father was born. Carolyn graduated from Ishpeming High School, and then Northern Michigan College (University) in 1959. That same year she married James Lalas from Melvindale, Michigan and then began teaching music for Fraser Public Schools. Her son Evans Brent Lalas was born in 1960, a daughter Terri Lynn Lalas was born in 1963 and daughter Kristi Lynn Lalas was born in 1965. In 1965 the family moved back to the Upper Peninsula and taught at Rudyard Public Schools, and in 1967 returned south to the town of Frankfort, Michigan, on the shore of Lake Michigan, where they lived for 53 years. in 2019 they moved to Williamsburg to be near daughters. Carolyn was very involved with athletics during her husbands coaching career, and eventually became a basketball referee. For many years she did substitute teaching in area school districts and also gave private piano lessons. In 1975 she started the Benzie Community Chorus and directed it for 38 years, during that time touring both in the US and Europe.
