Biography

Susan Gordon was born in 1854. The earliest found records for Susan indicate she was residing in the Webster County, Missouri household of James W. Potter and wife Rachel by the age of 6 years.[1] Her parentage is unknown but all records indicate she was born in Missouri. Whether she had any familial ties to James W. Potter is not evident by the 1876 administration of his estate but she was present in his household until at least 1870 and possibly until his death.[2] The Missouri State census of 1876 indicates she was then residing in the household of Wesley Popejoy, a grandson of Potter by his daughter Mary and Nathaniel Popejoy.[3]

On the 25th September in 1880, Susan was married to Isaac Stith of Douglas County, Missouri at the Greene County, Missouri home of Mary Potter's daughter Louisa C. Popejoy who had married Ben Haden.[4]

Susan's place of residency in 1880 nor in 1900 is found. The only evidence is a July 1886 newspaper clipping indicating Isaac Stith was among a group of jurors summoned at Springfield in Greene County to make inquest into the death of a man killed by a train.[5]

In 1902, Susie A. Stith was listed as the widow of Isaac Stith in the Jasper City Directory in Joplin County, Missouri as a renter at the same address as her son Claud Stith.[6] She married this year and at this location to Samuel W. Coe and she and son Amos were thereafter enumerated in Coe's 1910 Aurora household in Lawrence County, Missouri.[7][8] It is not clear if the couple were still married at the time of his death but his 1918 obituary makes no mention of a wife.[9]

Susan Coe was enumerated in the 1920 Muskogee County, Oklahoma household of her son Amos prior to her death in 1927.[10][11]
