It is sometimes listed that the wife of Thomas Staples was Mary Royce, perhaps daughter of Robert Royce. There is no accepted daughter of Robert named Mary. Proof of marriage between Thomas Staples and Mary Royce has not come to light. As such until proof is given she is Mary Unknown.
Mary, the wife of Thomas Staples was probably born in England between say 1619 (estimated birth of Thomas) and 1628 (daughter born c. 1646 - 18 = 1628). Dates between 1609 and 1634 are sometimes seen on personal trees. The date (in the data section has purposely been left blank)
In 1653, Goody Knapp, was accused of witchcraft. Goodwife Staples made a statement that she didn't believe and was herself brought under suspicion. Thomas promptly sued the accuser of slander and was awarded damages. Mrs. Staples was accused a second time along with her daughter Mary Harvey and grandaughter Hannah Harvey, but there was insufficient evidence for prosecution.
Mary Staples left a will dated 12 Sept 1696, left bequests to sons Thomas & John; Daus. Mary wife of Josiah Harvey and Hannah wife of John Beach; friend Mary Slawson; grandchildren Hannah Harvey & Mehitabel Fanton; and to Nathan Gold a book. She probably died in Fairfield where she lived.
