Biography

Date of Birth

According to Marshfield town records, Elizabeth, wife of husband Thomas Bourne, was buried on July 18, 1660 at the age of 70.[1][2] From this record, it is estimated that she was probably born about 1590.

Parentage

No evidence has been found that establishes Elizabeth's probable parentage or maiden name. The Find-A-Grave page for husband Thomas Bourne[3] and some other family trees say that her name was Elizabeth Rouse. However, that appears to be the result of confusing Thomas with his grandson Thomas Bourne (son of son John Bourne) who married Elizabeth Rouse.

Place of Birth

Elizabeth's place of birth is unknown. Some family trees state that she was born Tenterdon, Kent. As discussed under "Place of Birth" in the profile for her husband Thomas Bourne, however, locating Thomas and Elizabeth at Tenterdon was almost certainly a result of misinterpreting Thomas's will.

Marriage Date and Place

Based on Elizabeth's estimated date of birth (1590) and the earliest reasonably well established date of birth of any of their children (Margaret in 1608), Elizabeth and Thomas were probably married about 1607. Their place of marriage is unknown and would depend on their place of origin, although they were presumably married somewhere in England.

Children

Elizabeth and Thomas had the following children, all born before they immigrated to New England and thus presumably born in England. Since Elizabeth and Thomas's origins are uncertain and no birth or baptismal record has been definitively associated with any of their children, their place of birth is unknown and their birth dates are all estimates.

  • Margaret, b. about 1608, m. probably 1636 Josiah Winslow in Plymouth Colony, d. September 28, 1683 in Marshfield
  • John, b. probably sometime in 1609-1621,[4] m. July 18, 1645 Alice Besbeech at Marshfield, d. December 8, 1684 at Marshfield
  • Elizabeth, b. probably sometime in 1609-21,[5] m. December 11, 1638 Robert Waterman in Plymouth Colony, d. December 12, 1663 in Marshfield
  • Ann (Sarah), b. probably sometime in 1609-22,[6] m. January 21, 1639/40 Nehemiah Smith in Plymouth Colony, d. after January 12, 1684 probably in New London, Connecticut Colony
  • Martha, b. probably sometime in 1617-30,[7] m. 1st probably sometime in 1638-53[8] John Bradford, m. 2d about 1676 Thomas Tracy, d. before 1683 in Norwich, Connecticut Colony

As discussed above under "Place of Birth" in the profile for her husband Thomas Bourne, Savage's assertion that Elizabeth and Thomas had a daughter named Lydia has been disproven.

Immigration to New England; Settlement in Marshfield

As discussed in the profile for her husband Thomas Bourne, Thomas Bourne and his family probably arrived in the Plymouth Colony in late 1636 and, by 1638, settled in the part of Plymouth that became Marshfield.

Death

Marshfield town records state that "Elizabeth wife of Thomas Bourn aged 70 buried July 18, 1660."[1][2] Elizabeth therefore probably died in Marshfield on that date or a day or two before.
