Biography

GrGrGrandmother of James Madison, the 4th US President.
Ancestor of Zachary Taylor, the 12th US President.

The name of James Taylor I's first wife is not known. Frances Walker was assumed by some genealogists to be the first wife of James Taylor I based on the fact that James Taylor II named his first daughter Frances, and because James Taylor I was a neighbor to Maj. Thomas Walker. There is no primary source documentation indicating that Maj. Thomas Walker had a daughter named Frances, nor is there any primary source for the identity of James Taylor I's first wife.

James Taylor's first wife died on 22 Sep 1680,[1] leaving James with three young children.

I don’t know who this family was, but neither Orange (in the western part of VA) nor Caroline County (in the northern part) existed before 1728. I don’t think the area that became Bowling Green was settled until the 18th century so if there are records they are someplace else.

UNKNOWN-55225 and Walker-40947 are not ready to be merged because: the merge proposed for profiles attached as their husbands has been rejected with the comment that they're two different me. Looks like we need more research into Sarah's parents.

Walker-31649 and UNKNOWN-55225 appear to represent the same person because: James Taylor (1620-1698) 's first wife is unknown - there are no primary sources that identify her. But she is often shown in un-sourced genealogies as "Frances Walker."

I'm reluctant to acquiesce to a genealogical assumption that has never been supported by any primary source, regardless of how wide the assumption has proliferated. The James Taylor I Descendants Association has done extensive research on this issue and has not been able to find any record that identifies James Taylor's first wife. My vote would be to leave her as "Unknown."

I am going to propose to the profile managers that we actually merge into a Frances Walker profile. There are many SAR applications with the name of Frances Walker, there are so many books and genealogies with this name, we are going to spend our lives merging into this profile. Unless someone has a real issue with this approach....I am going to take care of it.

Walker-1659 and Walker-17340 are not ready to be merged because: as previously indicated, it would appear that this is a different Frances due to the number of children. Let's leave her alone for now until we get everything else straightened out.
