Biography

"Widow" Barbara crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the "Francis and the Elizabeth" out of Rotterdam by way of Deal with the other original Amish immigrants to America . Captained by George North, the ship arrived in Philadelphia 0n 21 SEP 1742. Barbara's husband died on the voyage and left her with nine children.[1]

Christian Yoder, the brother of her husband John Jacob Yoder, arrived on the same ship.

Research Notes

From her Geni profile:

YrRu quotes Karl Joder research which shows that the Oley township "Widow" Barbara Yoder was Barbara Rupp who was married to a son of Hans Yoder. We believe that Christian and "Strong Jacob Yoder" were sons of "Widow" Barbara. - Barbara whose husband died at sea on his way to America and was buried in the sea, had nine small children that Barbara Yoder brought with her to Pa.; eight sons, and one daughter who was married to Christopher Beiler. (HJ p. 190)

A merged profile listed Unknown Rupp and Verena Joder as parents, citing "YrRu (Yoder Reunion?) quotes Karl Joder research which shows that the Oley township "Widow" Barbara Yoder was Barbara Rupp who was married to a son of Hans Yoder."[2]. Because this secondary source could not be confirmed at the time of merge, the merge was completed under the surname Unknown rather than Rupp and the putative parents were not listed. Unknown Rupp was too young to have a child around 1695. See See "A word of Warning" in A Palatine Settlement in Oley Valley in Pennsylvania by Karl Yoder

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Barbara by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Barbara:

I carefully considered the comments of Michael Stafford regarding the Karl Stafford research. I believe the source of the note in question was Amish-Mennonite Kishacoquillas Valley Database. Y-DNA research has discredited the lineage of Barbara's husband through Hans Yoder leaving many questions about Widow Barbara and her husband. I have limited the profile to the little confirmed information that we have but have preserved the Karl Joder theory in the research notes. I hope that this is satisfactory to all.

I haven't been able to again find the source where I read it on the Internet, but "YrRu quotes Karl Joder research which shows that the Oley Township "Widow" Barbara Yoder was Barbara Rupp who was married to a son of Hans Yoder." This is on shown on https://www.geni.com/people/Barbara-Yoder/6000000011044059801, https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~streetancestors/family/3/40883html and https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kishvalley&id=13. This research is less than 3 years old. Please do not disconnect her from her husband without reading these!

UNKNOWN-57007 and Rupp-570 appear to represent the same person because: These two Barbaras are married to the same man. Are they one person?
