Biography

Agnes was born about 1176 following widely published estimates,[1][2] without explanation of these estimates while other authors do not report a birth year. She was the daughter of Konrad von Staufen and Irmgard von Henneberg. Her cousin, Emperor Heinrich VI, negotiated a marriage with Philippe II, King of France but with the help of her mother she married Heinrich von Braunschweig[3][4] at the end of 1193 or the beginning of 1194 at the castle Stahleck instead, thus initiating the reconciliation between the Welf and Staufer families. Agnes died May 10,[5] 1204 and was buried at Stade.[6]
