Abel was baptised April 19, 1785 in St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall, England. He was the son of Nicholas Uglow and Joan Cord.
There is a Cornwall OPC Database Baptism Transcript for Abel Ogle baptised on the 10th of April 1785 at St Stephens by Saltash. His parents are Nicholas and Joan.
He was a shipwright in the Devonport dockyard and married Salome Venning in 1805 in Antony. The family lives in Wilcove which is on the river, just north of Torpoint and just across the river from the dockyard.
Abel and son James are impossible to find in the 1841 Census but Abel's wife Salome is in Bodmin Lunatic Asylum.[1]
In the 1851 census Abel is described as a superannuated shipwright and is visiting a labourer, Benjamin Bassett, living in St Germans.[2] Wife Salome is at 15 Fore St, Antony with their grandson, Thomas Abel Uglow Weeks.
Salome dies in Bodmin Lunatic Asylum on March 23, 1860 and is buried there on March 26th.
In 1861 he was living at 23 Portland Place, Stoke Damerel with his daughter, Salome.[3]
Abel and Salome might have worked at Portsmouth dockyard for a spell as we have an IGI record for Nicholas Oglow, born there in 1812.
Abel was living at Torpoint, Cornwall when he died at age 84 and later was buried December 31st in Antony.[4]
