Biography

Benjamin was born in September 26, 1857 to William Edward Ulm and Sarah (Campbell) in Wabash County, Illinois.[1][2]

On June 19, 1860, Benjamin, 2 years old, was living with his father William and mother Sarah in the Mount Carmel, Wabash, Illinois. William was a farmer with an estate valued at $2,000. Sarah was 23. Other children were living with them, William 16, Neal 14, James 4 and Mary 8/12. They also had a border named Sela Leech who was a teacher at the local school.[3]

On June 2, 1870, Benjamin was 15 and still living with his father William age 55 and was still living in Mount Carmel, Wabash, Illinois. William was a farmer and his personal estate was $700. His real estate was $5,000. Benjamin's mother Sarah was 33. Willam and Sarah had 6 children living with them. The other children they were living with was Mary 12, Hester 10, George 5, Mathew 2 and Fannie 6/12. They had two boarders, Thomas Rielly 23 and his wife Maria 18. Thomas helped with the farm while his wife helped with house keeping.[4]

On the 14/15 day of June in 1880, Benjamin age 22, was living with his wife Ida age 20 and baby daugther Melda N 10 months old in Lick Prairie, Wabash County, Illinois in dwelling 11. He as a farmer.[5]

On June 5, 1900, Benjamin age 42 was living in Salem. Edwards County, Illinois on Wide Street. On the census he was on sheet number 6, dwelling 130 and family number 131. He had been married to Ida age 41, for 21 years. He was a Day Laborer and owned his own Farm. Living with them was thier sons Truman, age 17 and Ralph age 11. Ida had 2 of 4 children living. Truman and Ralph were in school. Everyone in the family could read and write.[6]

On April 27, 1910, Benjamin was 52 and still living in Salem. He was a owned a fruit farm. He still owned his farm. His wife Ida age 50 had been now married 31 years. Son Ralph W. age 21 lived with them. They also has a white female servent named Ola Bierhaus age 24 living with them. Ralph worked on his father's farm. They lived next door to their son Truman and his wife Viola M. [7]

On January 27, 1920, Ben was 62 and living in West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois. He was a retired farmer. His wife Ida age 60 still lived with him.[8]

Benjamin passed away in March 26, 1925 in Edwards County, Illinois. He was buried in the Moraivian Cemetery on March 28, 1925.[9][10]
