Biography

Birth

Maria was born on December 22, 1863 in the village of Johannestal in the Beresan district of the Odessa area and Black Sea region of South Russia to Matthaeus Ulmer and Katharina (Delzer) Ulmer. She was the fourth of her father's 11 children and the fourth of her mother's 5 children. Maria was baptized on December 26, 1863.[1]


Immigration

On September 1, 1874, at the age of 10, Maria, along with her parents and their blended family, made the journey to America. They departed from Hamburg, Germany aboard the S.S. Schiller and arrived in New York, NY.[2]


Family

In 1885, at the age of 22, Maria married Friedrich Schatz (1861-1924).

On February 3, 1920, at the age of 56, Maria passed away in Spokane, WA. She is buried in Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane.[3][4]
