Biography

John Ulmer was born in 1842 in Willmandingen, Reutlingen, Württemberg, Germany. According to his autobiographical obituary, at 15 (1859) he emigrated alone to the United States stopping in Philadelphia, where two of his brothers were.

Then he moved westward to Arrowsmith, McLean County, IL. When volunteers were requested for the Union army for the Civil War, he enlisted (9 Aug 1862) in Co. "I", 94th Illinois Volunteers. He was involved in the Battle of Prairie Grove, AR, on 7 Dec 1862, and the Siege of Vicksburg, MS, which fell 4 Jul 1863. In October the regiment was sent to Brownsville, TX. In Jul 1864, they were moved and took active part in the Siege of Fort Morgan, AL, then was involved in the final assault and capture of the Spanish Fort, both of these forts guarding the city of Mobile, AL. The regiment guarded prisoners at Ship Island, MS, and did garrison duty at Galveston, TX, until it was mustered out of service on 17 Jul 1865, after which it headed back to Illinois.

John was married 26 May 1866 to Sarah A Lokey at Saybrook, McLean County, IL. Her previous husband, Unknown Moody, was killed in the Civil War, leaving her with two sons, George Moody and Samuel Moody. A daughter, Ida Jane Ulmer was born in McLean in 1867. They soon moved to Crawford Township, Crawford County, Kansas, near the town of Girard, along with Sarah's parents, John & Mary Lokey. Two sons were born to them there, Arthur Grant Ulmer and David Rust Ulmer. Then, in about 1873 or 1874, the family moved to Louisiana, where Mary K. Ulmer was born in 1876 and Katie Ulmer was born in 1877. For health reasons, in early 1880, they moved to Joachim, Jefferson, Missouri, a farming community just south of St Louis. Walter Frandlin Ulmer was born there in 1880 and Leslie James Ulmer was born in 1883. In 1891 they relocated to Kokomo, IN, then Alexandria, IN. On 21 Dec 1903, Sarah passed away and was buried there in the IOOF Cemetery, Alexandria, IN. In the 1870 and 1880 Censuses John lists his occupation as "farmer".

John decided to find a warmer place and moved to Zephyrhills, Florida, a suburb of Tampa, where he lived for 9 years. In May, 1919, he traveled back to Indiana to visit his children and ended up at the home of his daughter, Mary (Ulmer) Brass, in Kokomo, IN, who cared for him until he passed away 3 Dec 1919, at the age of 77. John was buried next to Sarah in the IOOF Cemetery in Alexandria, IN.
