Research Notes

There are so many William Umberger's, it is impossible to know which one is the son of John and Mary Umberger. He could have been born in either Pennsylvania or Virginia. He may have stayed in PA or relocated to Wythe, VA with the rest of the family. For instance, here are two census records for 1830; either could be him.

William Umberger, Wythe, VA[1]This household has one male and one female each between 20-30 years old and one male under the age of 5. If the birthdate in Arthur Umbarger's chart is correct, William would be 40 years old in 1830.

William Umberger, Lower Paxton, Dauphin, PA[2]This household also has one male and one female each between 20-30 years old and one male under the age of 15.

William Umbarger married Polly Johnson, 1827 in Wythe, VA.[3]This William may be the one that relocated to Indiana between 1843-1846 (based on birth location of children) in the 1860 Census.[4]The 1860 census would put his birth year as 1804.
