Biography

Benjamin was born in 1770. He passed away in 1853 at the age of 83.

He married first Elizabeth (Hubbard) Umfleet (1775 - 1796) on 12/28/1788 in Gates County, North Carolina. Elizabeth died in 1796 in North Carolina. Findagrave #65757979 (lists her death in Lawrence County, Illinois)

Benjamin and his second wife, Mourning Polson (1767 - 1842) were married 3/29/1800 in Gates County, North Carolina. Findagrave #60630489

Benjamin purchased 40 acres from the government (NE1/4 NW1/4 of Sec 20 T3N R13) on 10/4/1838 in Lawrence County, Illinois where the family made their home. They designated a family burial ground (Umfleet/Huston Cemetery) either in the woods on their property or on their son Seth's which was adjacent.

Notes from the Union Primitive Baptist Church state that Benjamin and Mourning were in the county by at least 3/23/1833. The 1830 Illinois Census states that Ben and his wife, both older and without other family in the household, were counted in Lawrence County at that time.

The 1840 census showed the couple living alone in Lawrence County. By the 1850 census, Benjamin (80 yrs.) was living with Seth (45yrs born in NC), and Rebecca Umfleet (39 yrs. born in Kentucky), and two boys, Benjamin F (16 yrs. born in IL) and Ansell H(Harrison) (20 yrs. born in IL).

Benjamin died 12/1853 and was buried beside his wife Mourning at the family cemetery now known as Huston Cemetery.
