Biography

Anne Underhill was born about 1645; possibly the daughter of Capt. John Underhill, Jr. (See note below). About 1664, she married William Bassett in York County, Virginia.[1]

Anne and William had seven children:

  1. Thomas Bassett (1665-1720); m. 1) Elinor, 2) Elizabeth, 3) Mary
  2. Anne Bassett (1668- ); m. Thomas Moore
  3. Ursula Bassett
  4. Mary Bassett (c.1671- ); m. John Baughan
  5. John Bassett (c.1673- ); m. Elizabeth
  6. Elizabeth Bassett (1675- ); m. John Howle
  7. Frances Bassett (c.1678- ); m. Robert Horsley

Anne's husband William died in May 1724, leaving a will which names Anne and their children. He was 81 years old.[2] Anne date of death is currently unknown.

Research Notes

Capt. John Underhill Jr., was approximately 40 years old when he married William Bassett's mother Mary. It is possible that Anne is his daughter by a previous marriage, but no documentation has been found to corroborate this. She is not mentioned in his will, but this could be because she was already married and living in New Kent County. He may have given her portion of his estate to her and William at the time of their marriage. William and Capt. Underhill jointly patented land in New Kent Co.[3]

At Orphans Court held for York County 10 September 1662 Whereas Lt. Col. William Barbar (one of the overseers of William Felgate's will), Mrs. Mary Underhill, relict of Felgate, being present, desired court's judgement on what a negro girl given to Mary Bassett (daughter of Mrs. Underhill by Thomas Bassett, her husband) is yearly worth, the court says her labor is worth 500 lbs tob. and it is ordered that Capt. John Underhill enjoy her for that allowance, and be accountable to the overseers.[4]
