Clara was born on May 25, 1876 in McDonough County, Illinois. She was the daughter of James Underhill and Cordelia Rippetoe.
Some research shows that she is sometimes confused with Clara M. Nollette - unsure who she is.
Clara first appeared in the 1880 US census record at the age of about five. The record listed her at age 6, though ancestry documents her as age four. June 16, 1880 in Colchester, she was living with her parents and older brother Charles. Her father James was 34 years old and a farmer. Her mother Cordelia was 27 and a housekeeper. Her brother Charles was 9 and and her great uncle James A. Underhill who was also living with them at the time, was 65, single, and a farmer who was born in New York.
Between this date (June 16, 1880) and June 6, 1900, Clara's mother Cordelia gave birth to and lost a third child. The child's gender and age are unknown. It was noted on the 1900 US census that Cordelia birthed three children with two living.
Following suit, Cordelia gave birth to and lost a fourth child between the dates of June 6, 1900 and April 26, 1910. It's noted on the 1910 US census that Cordelia birthed four children with two living.
The 1910 US census is the first census where Clara is listed as married. Living in the household of James Rundle, wife Clara and James were noted as being married for eight years. James and Clara married November 24, 1902 in Peoria, Illinois.
James and Clara welcomed their first child on October 21, 1903 in Colchester. His name was Raymond Orlan Rundle.
Three years later, Clara gave birth to their first daughter on July 3, 1906. Temple Lenora Rundle was born in Colchester as well.
The 1910 census continues to show us that they lived on Summary Street in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. Taken on April 19th, head of household James Rundle was 33 years old and was noted as being born in Illinois. His parents, though unknown at the moment, were both born in England. James was working as a post office clerk. He was able to read, write, and speak English. Clara was 35 years old, and did not work. Son Raymond was six and daughter Temple (who was listed as a boy) was three.
Almost a year later, Clara gave birth to their third child, a son named James Urvin Underhill. James was born on April 29, 1911 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.
Roughly eight years later, Clara's father James Edwin Underhill passes away. James died on January 6, 1919 in Colchester at the age of 73.
January 2, 1920, Clara and her family appear in the US census, still living in Galesburg on Arnold Street. James was 42 years old and still working for the post office as a letter carrier for the city. Clara was 45 and did not work. Son Raymond was 16 years old, daughter Temple was 13 and son James (Urvin) was eight. Raymond and Temple were students in school.
Eight years later, James and Clara lost their first child. Temple Lenora Underhill passed away at the age of 22 on September 19, 1928 in Galesburg. They buried her in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Colchester, McDonough, Illinois on September 21, 1928, where she rested with many other family members.
The 1930 US census was taken on April 4 for the Rundle Family that year. They continued to live on Arnold Street, and James was 53 years old. He continued to work as a letter carrier, this time for the government. Clara was 55 and did not work. Son Raymond was still at home at the age of 27. He was single and worked as a check clerk in the railroad industry. Son James Urvin was 18, single and not working but was in school.
A US City Directory listed in 1938 that Clara Rundle was still living on Arnold Street in Galesburg.
A year later on May 27, 1939, Clara May Underhill Rundle passed away in Galesburg at the age of 63. She was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Colchester, McDonough, Illinois where she rests with many of her family members.
