Biography

William Underhill was born about 1848 in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England to Caroline Underhill.

In 1851 William Underlin [Underhill] (age 4) was a lodger at Oak Hill in Tetbury in the household of Lewelin Parker, along with his mother Caroline (30) and sister Jewannah (9).^[1]

William's mother married Henry Bunting in 1853.

In 1861 Wm Underhill (age 14, Plough Boy) lived at ...Land in Tetbury with his stepfather Henry Burtley [Bunting] (49, Agricultural Labourer) and mother Sarah [Caroline] (45).^[2]

In 1871 William "Bunting" (age 21, Blacksmith) lived in Tetbury with his stepfather Henry (59, Agricultural Labourer) and mother Caroline (57, Laundress).^[3]

William Underhill married Helen Sheppard in 1873. The marriage was registered in Tetbury in the last quarter of the year.^[4] Helen already had one daughter, who took William's surname: Laura Louise Adele (Sheppard/Underhill) Joel (1871-1969).

William and Helen had six children: Justina Avice Kate Underhill (1874-1921), Gilbert William Willoughby Underhill (1875-1957), Harold Charles Underhill (1877-1878), Annie Blanche (Underhill) Gapper (1878-1975), Emma Charlotte (Underhill) Hitchings (1880-1974), Gertrude May (Underhill) Davis (1882-1907).

In 1881 William Underhill (age 32, Blacksmith) lived in Beverstone, Gloucestershire with his wife Hellen (33, Laundress) and five children: Laura (9, Scholar), Kate (7, Scholar), Gilbert (5, Scholar), Annie (2), and Emma C (0), as well as two lodgers [his stepfather & mother]: Henry Bunting (70, Agr Lab) and Caroline Bunting (66, Laundress).^[5]

In 1891 William Underhill (age 42, Blacksmith) lived in Beverstone with his wife Hellen (42, Laundress) and five children: Kate (17, Monitress), Gilbert (15, Blacksmith), Annie (12, Scholar), Charlotte (10, Scholar), and May (8, Scholar), as well as his stepfather Henry Bunting (80, Agricultural Labourer) and mother Caroline Bunting (73).^[6]

In 1901 William Underhill (age 52, Blacksmith) lived at Tetbury Road in Beverstone with his wife Helen (53, Laudress), son Gilbert (25, Blacksmith), daughter May (18), and mother Caroline Buntin (88).^[7]

William Underhill passed away on 20 Jul 1903, aged 54 years. His death was registered in Tetbury in the third quarter of the year.^[8] "UNDERHILL William of Beverston Gloucestershire died 20 July 1903 Administration London 5 October to Helen Underhill widow Effects £103 15s."^[9]
