Martha Jane was enumerated with her family by the U.S. Census taker on 1 June 1880 in the Mayo Magisterial District of Patrick County, Virginia, as follows: Underwood, Isaac W., white, male, age 45, married, farmer; Underwood, Mary L., white, female, age 43, wife, keeping house; Underwood, William M., white, male, age 19, son, single, labors on farm, attended school; Exony E., white, female, age 17, daughter, single, at house, attended school; Sarah L., white, female, age 15, daughter, single, at house, attended school; Rebecca E.R., white, female, age 11, daughter, single, at house, attended school, cannot write; Martha J., white, female, age 8, daughter, single, at house, attended school. The entire household was born in Virginia, with both parents born in Virginia. [2]
On 12 January 1896 in Patrick County, Virginia, Martha Jane married George Washington Childress.[3] Martha and George do not appear to have had any children.
In the 1910 U.S. Census, Martha and George were enumerated on 27 May 1910 in Mayo River Magisterial District of Stuart, Patrick County, Virginia. They had been married for 14 years. No children were listed. [The columns for how many children born and how many still living were both blank.][4]

Martha Jane died on 22 January 1940, of tuberculosis, in Stuart, Patrick County, Virginia.[6] Her bereaved husband, George, had carved into her gravestone the following inscription: "HERE LIES A PERFECT WOMAN." George died several years later, on 4 October 1951, and was buried with his beloved wife.[7]
