Biography

Samuel Underwood was born circa 1656 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. His parents were:Thomas Underwood and Elizabeth Meeres. There is some suggestion that he was actually raised by the Meeres family. This needs further research.

Circa 1681, Samuel Underwood married Mary Ann. She is thought to have been the daughter of Henry Wilcock, a Quaker.

There are two ancient land records of Anne Arundel County, Maryland that are thought to be evidence of Samuel Underwood's life there before moving into the area that is now called New Castle County, Delaware:

2 Tracts of Land Possibly owned by Samuel Underwood

Samuel Underwood purchased land in New Castle, Delaware on August 20, 1708. In this land record, he is said to be Samuel Underwood of Brandywine. The Brandywine region is to the southeast of Chester County, Pennsylvania.[1] Here is the land record:

Samuel Underwood wrote, signed and dated his will on June 11, 1722 at New Castle, Delaware.[1]

Will of Samuel Underwood, names Mary his wife

There is an obvious error in the Probate documents, as the will was marked as "proved" date of February 18, 1722. This date would have had to be after the will date, which was June 11, 1722. Here is what it looks like in the online viewfinder at ancestry.com:

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share DNA with Samuel:

I am beginning to doubt the parents and siblings of this Samuel Underwood. Just look at the DNA connections Samuel. At the very least his siblings should share some of the of these connections but there is nothing there.

This person is NOT the Samuel Underwood born in Chelmsford, Mass. Vital records list the father as William Underwood. His mother was Sarah Pellet. The Chelmsford Samuel died in Littleton, NH on March (, 1735. He had migrated there with son Aquila.... Vital records list the death.
