Van Wyck Underwood was born on October 20th, 1827 in New York to John Underwood and Catharine Field.[citation needed] He married Mary Jane Green on September 12th, 1850 in Rollin, Michigan.[1]
He purchased his first tract of land in November 1859 from Prior and Abigail Jane Foster for $5,600. The property consisted of 200 acres contained in sections 29, 30, and 32 in Woodstock Township of Lenawee County.[2] It is unclear if there was any running water on the land, but Van Wyck was enumerated the following year as a miller. He may have been operating J. D. Comstock's grist mill that was located a few miles south in the village of Addison.[3]
In 1900, he and Mary purchased a tract of land from their son, Arthur, located at lot 5, block D of Watrous 1st addition in Redlands, California for $250.[4] That same year they celebrated their Golden Anniversary at Midway Springs, California. Every living descendant was in attendance, including 8 children (and their spouses), 24 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
Van Wyck died on September 20th, 1902 in San Bernardino County, California. At the time of his death he possessed $2,500 of property in Redlands, California.[5][6]
