James Henry Underwood was born about 1820 in Alabama to parents Alexander John Underwood and Levina (Vinne) Pruitt. He married Elizabeth Ann Newberry about 1841 in Marion, Alabama. Children: Anna, Martha Jane, Alexander W, Jacob Valentine, Jesse M, Mary Elizabeth, John Walker, Andrew Washington. He died on 7 Jun 1862 in Richmond, Virginia, while serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

James served as a private i Company D, 20th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, Confederate Army during the Civil War.
