Biography

Estelle was born on October 16, 1909 in Gainesville, Georgia.^[1][2] She was the daughter of Joseph Underwood and Frances Brewer.^[3][4] She married Kelsey Dozier Howington (1907-1968) on September 9, 1928.^[5][6] The couple had three children:^[7]

1. Helen (Howington) McGee b. 8/5/33
2. Kay Howington b. 1936
3. Dan Howington b. 1938

Estelle passed away on January 27, 2006 at the age of 96 while living at the Family Life Enrichment Center in Watkinsville.^[2] She was buried on January 29, 2006 in the Lithonia City Cemetery which is in DeKalb county, Georgia.^[8]

"Dr. Estelle Howington born October 16, 1909 died on January 27 , 2006 at Family Life Enrichment Center in Watkinsville, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband , Kelsey Howington. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Dunegan Underwood and Frances Brewer Underwood of Gainesville, Ga. She attended Brenau College , earned a B.S. ED. from Oglethorpe University, and M.S. from the University of Alabama and a PhD. from the University of Georgia. Dr. Howington worked for Dekalb County Board of Education for 35 years as a teacher and principal of Rock Chapel School in Lithonia and assistant director of the Reading Clinic which she helped establish. She was then named director of the Reading Clinic which was judged by the N.E.A., in 1968 as the best such facility in the United States. A member of Alpha Delta Kappa Educational Sorority, she was active in the First Baptist Church of Lithonia as a Sunday School teacher and member of the choir : her faith was an integral part of her life. Surviving are daughters Helen Mcgee of Athens, Kay Howington of Winder, son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Eleanor Howington of Watkinsville, Ga., 3 grandsons and 2 great-grandsons. A funeral service will be held 4;30 Sunday January 29, in the Chapel of Henry Funeral Home with Dr. Jim Martin officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends 3-4:30 on Sunday at the Henry Funeral Home, Lithonia.
