Susan Durfee Underwood was born on March 27th, 1831 to Daniel Underwood and Chloe Durfee. The Underwoods were members of the Society of Friends and reported Susan's birth at the Farmington Yearly Meeting, which was about 25 miles from their farm in Williamson (where Susan was likely born).

On August 27th, 1856, Susan married Joseph Franklin Burleigh in Lenawee County, Michigan. After their marriage the Burleighs returned to Joseph's native town of Livonia, New York, where he represented A. S. Barnes. In the spring of 1858 the relocated to Grundy County, Illinois and established a home in Mazon. In the fall of 1859 they settled on 160 acres in Mazon township, which they improved and expanded thereafter.

Joseph and Susan had four children between 1860 and 1870, all of whom were born in Mazon: Arthur Eugene, Alice Gertrude, Ida Josephine, and Charles Irving.

In 1900 Joseph and Chloe lived with their widowed daughter, Ida, and her three school-aged children in Mazon Village.

Susan died on March 9th, 1903 at the age of 72 years. Joseph lived another seven years before being laid to rest next to Susan in Brookside Cemetery in Mazon.

Birthplace - Susan's birthplace is assumed to be that of her parents' residence in Williamson, New York.
1840 Census - Susan is assumed to be one of the two girls aged 5 to 10 years in Daniel Underwood's 1840 household.[3]
