Biography

Jonathan Underwood was born in Blackrod, Lancashire and was christened at St Katherine's church there on the 11th May, 1834.[1] He was the 10th of 14 children born to Michael and Catherine Underwood and two of his siblings had died before he was born. His father was a miner and most of the children worked at the colliery too. The 1841 census shows the family living in Kenyon Lane, Wigan and 7 year old Jonathan was described as a collier as were his older brothers and sisters.[2]

His father died in November 1847[3] at the same time as a major flooding incident at the local colliery which resulted in most of the local families being without employment.[4]

By 1851 the remaining members of the family who weren't already married were living in Wheatsheaf Row in Coppul, Chorley with their mother. 16 year old Jonathan and his two older brothers were still working in the mines whilst their older sister was a picker at a bleach works. The youngest two sisters were both described as scholars.[5]

Jonathan married Elizabeth Langshaw at St Wilfrid's church in Standish on the 25th November 1855. Jonathan signed the register himself but Elizabeth and their witnesses, James and Ann Green, all made their mark. Shortly after, following in the footsteps of an older brother, Jonathan left the mines to become a pointsman on the railway where he remained for the rest of his working life.[6]

By 1861 Jonathan and Elizabeth were living in Bailey's Court, Turton Row, Wigan with their 3 eldest children.[7] Sadly, their daughter Margaret Ann died before the year was over[8] and though they went on to have another 6 children, 3 of those also died as infants. [9][10][11][12]

In 1871 the family were living in Athertons Yard,[9] at 10 Douglas Road East in 1881[13] and 7 Actons Walk by 1891. At that time, sons Joshua and Jonathan and daughter Margaret Ann (named after her deceased sister) were still living at home and Elizabeth's mother was also resident.[14] Son Jonathan married in 1893[15] and Joshua the following year. [16]

Jonathan died on the 11th April, 1895 at the age of 60.[17] He was buried in C of E plot C 193 in Lower ince Cemetery on the 15th April and before the end of the year his mother-in-law and a 3 month old grandson were interred in the same plot. A very sad year for the family.
