Biography

Magdalena Unknown ... [1]

Magdalena [maiden surname unknown], widow of Johann Gottfried HERMSTADT. Magdalena remarried 1775 Dec 31, at St. John’s Anglican church (Lunen.) to Johann Philip George HIMMELMAN.

Her previous husband, Hermstadt, had been a lace-weaver back home in Hamburg, & his “signature [was] beautifully printed” at time of migration. The Hermstadts arrived at Halifax 1752 on the “Speedwell”, he owing for 4 “freights”, consisting of 3 full fares (the 2 parents & 1 offspring over age 14) & 2 half fares (2 children aged 4-14). Early “victualling lists” show only the 2 parents plus sons Martin Gottlieb & Nicholas Friederick. Another child, Maria Barbara, was bap. 1753 Nov 5 – after the family settled at Lunenburg. Herr Hermstadt died around mid-1755. He had received land grants – plus, as was the practice, further grants were made in his name after his death, which actually went to his estate, i.e., his heirs.
