Biography

Hannah was born July 18,1680,[1] in Springfield,Massachusetts. Hannah was the child of Japhet Chapin and Abilene Cooley.[2] [3]Hannah, wife of Timothy, died Sept. 30, 1765,[4] in Deerfield,Mass.[5]

"Hannah was married Dec. 3, 1703,[6] to John Sheldon of Deerfield. The town of Deerfield was attacked by Indians about three months after her marriage, and she was taken captive with many others, and marched to Canada, and after about two years many of the captives were redeemed and returned home. I have reasons for believing that Hannah's husband went to Canada and obtained her release before the release of the other prisoners. John, son of John and Hannah of Deerfield, born in Springfield, April 1, 1706."[5] "Hannah's friends felt some anxiety in regard to her settling in a frontier town, and as she was making a dress previous to her leaving the maternal home, her mother told her she must make the dress so it would do to wear into captivity." The Chapin Genealogy, containing a very large proportion of the descendants of Dea Samuel Chapin ..., footnote, [5]

"In 1704 during the attack on Deerfield while the enemy were cutting through the door of the house, John and Hannah jumped from the second-story window... Hannah was taken prisoner to Canada and was there two years. She was redeemed by her father-in-law, John Sheldon..." [5]
