Born in 1881 as Mustafa, at a time when Turks did not have family names, he is recorded as the son of Ali Rıza and his wife Zübeyde Hanım. He was given the additional name of Kemal as a schoolboy and was known as Mustafa Kemal until 1934, when he was granted by the Turkish parliament the additional name of Atatürk, meaning Father of the Turks. He has since been known in Turkey and in the English language as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He was the founder and first president (1923–38) of the Republic of Turkey.[1]
