Biography

Nothing is known about Ann Unknown except that in about 1755 she married Rawleigh Hightower (Sr.) in Brunswick County, Virginia. Her birth year of 1735 has been estimated from her marriage year. Rawleigh and Ann (Unknown) Hightower had at least one son and one daughter:

  1. Martha Hightower, b: ca. 1770 in Brunswick County, Virginia; m. Upton Edmonson on Nov. 26, 1792.
  2. Gregory Hightower, b: ca. 1770; m: Mary Trotter in Jan. 1703; died in April 1703 - all in Brunswick Co., Virginia.

Some genealogies also list another son:

Rawleigh Hightower, Jr., b: 1760 in Brunswick Co., Virginia

However, a Hightower descendant, Edward Hightower, has questioned that Rawleigh Hightower (Jr.) was Rawleigh's son, citing a 18th Century Brunswick County court document stating that Gregory Hightower, son of Rawleigh Hightower, had no heirs at the time of his death (April 1703) other than his widow, Mary (Trotter) Hightower, and his sister, Martha (Hightower) Upton, administrator of his estate. This court reference was not disputed by either party despite their differences regarding the disposition of Gregory's estate. [1]

In 1782, Rawleigh Hightower (Sr.) was appointed legal guardian of Catherine, Rawleigh, Sally (Sarah), and John Hightower, the orphaned children of his younger brother, John Hightower. John's minor-age son, Rawleigh Hightower, may have added "Jr." to his name, thereby creating the confusion of his Uncle Rawleigh for his father: John Hightower.[2]

Rawleigh Hightower wrote his Last Will & Testament on May 10, 1801. He died that same year in October, at his home plantation in Brunswick County, Virginia.

His wife survived him but her death date is not known.
