Biography

Volga German
Susanna (Unknown) Scheirer was a Volga German.
Susanna (Unknown) Scheirer has German Roots.

Family #100 in the 1775 Grimm census.
Family #30 in the 1798 Grimm census.

According to the 1775 Grimm census, she was 46 years old, giving her a birth year of 1729. She and Philip had two daughters, Maria Katharina, born in 1773, and Katharina, only 2 weeks old at the time of the 1775 census.

Her husband is mentioned in the Kulberg Reports as traveling with his wife Susanna, and the tendency is to think that these two women were the same person. That, however, is not necessarily so. In between the Kulberg Reports in 1766 and the 1775 census was the 1767 Grimm census, the first census taken in the colony. In that 1767 document, his wife's name is Elisabeth and she is the same age as he is. The couple has a young daughter, also named Elisabeth, born in 1766. Eight years later, in 1775, her husband is married to a Susanna who is 11 years older than Philipp.

These appear to be three distinct women, unless you consider a census taker error. Without the age of the first wife named Susanna, it's hard to judge if the two Susannas are the same person.

It's also possible all three are one person name Susanna Elisabeth or Elisabeth Susanna, and that she gave a different name to the census taker in 1767. But that still doesn't account for the age discrepancy, unless it's the age in 1775 census that's wrong.

Unfortunately this Susanna didn't live to be included in the 1798 census, so we can't use her age that year as a reference check for any of these possibilities.

For the time being, I'm treating Philipp's wives as three different people. The Susanna in this profile is Susanna 2, also known as Philipp's third wife. If and when I learn that these women are the same people I will merge and update the profiles as needed. So, to sum up, there appear to be three wives for Philipp Scherer/Scheirer:

  1. Susanna (1), age unknown in 1766 Kulberg Reports
  2. Elisabeth, age 28, born 1739 in 1767 Grimm census
  3. Susanna (2), age 46, born 1729 in the 1775 Grimm census

Again the Susanna of this profile passed away prior to the 1798 census, where her husband is listed as a widower.
