Biography

Rose was born about 1637, probably in Armagh, Ireland, to unknown parents. Her birth surname may have been Harlan.[1]

She married Henry Dixon (also spelled Dickson, Dixson) in Ireland, before 1660.[1] She and Henry were members of the Lurgan Monthly Meeting.[2] In 1683, they witnessed the marriage of William Dixon, assumed by genealogists to be their son, to Isabelle Rea in Seagoe, County Armagh, Ireland.[3] William is known to have immigrated to the American colonies with his sisters Dinah and Rose before 1690,[1] but whether Rose or Henry went with them is unclear.

Ben F. Dixon claims that Rose came to the colonies as a widow in the company of her children but cites no authority.[4] Quaker researcher Herbert Standing disputes that claim, along with the tradition that Henry was an innkeeper in New Castle, Delaware, adding, "[I]t is difficult to find any records substantiating the fact that either the father or the mother came to Delaware."[2]

When and where Rose died is unclear. No estate proceedings have been found for her. It is possible that she died in Ireland before her children immigrated to America.

Children

  • William (b. ca. 1662; d. 1708)
  • Dinah (b. ca. 1657; d. ca. 1735)
  • Rose (b. ca. 1661; d. 1722)

According to Herbert Standing, William, Dinah, and Rose were all members of the "Newark [Delaware] Meeting community."[2] All three married in 1690. William married Ann Gregg, daughter of William Gregg.[1] Rose married Thomas Pierson.[5]Dinah married Michael Harlan.[6]

Hi profile managers,

Since this profile is currently project-protected with a Quakers project box and previous issue about the person's maiden name and parentage, we propose that the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) project be added as co-manager. All current profile manager would stay on as PMs.

Please contact the project leaders if there are any issues. Thanks!
