Margaret, Wife of William Underwood
Uncertain Origin
Apparently we do not have documentation of Margaret's maiden name and do not know her origin.[1][2]
No record has yet been found for the date of Margaret's immigration to Virginia Colony. Her children had all arrived there before 1650. Col. Moore Fauntleroy [Fantleroy] was granted headrights for the transport of George Underwood, Anne Underwood, Thomas Underwood, Elizabeth Underwood, William Underwood, Sarah Underwood, and Margarett Underwood. It is not confirmed that George and Thomas Underwood were Margaret's children, but they do appear to be related in some fashion.
These headrights were included in several land patents in Rappahannock River recorded 0n 22 May 1650. In total Col. Fauntleroy was granted 8,650 acres for transport of 169 persons.[4] There is one person transported by Col. Fauntleroy that is in question. Many researchers have stated that Col. Fauntleroy was married to Mary Underwood, daughter of Margaret and her first husband.[5] They use as part of the proof one of the recorded patents which reads:
450 acs. in Rappa. RIv. on the N. side in Swan bay .... 22 May 1650, p. 231. Trans. of 9 pers: Gabriell Willson, Eliza. his wife, Henry Cox, George Dillard, Ann Vecery Richd. Powell, Mr. Geo. Underwood, Mary his wife, Anne Underwood. I read this as George Underwood and his wife Mary. Others read it as Mary nee Underwood, wife of Col. Fauntleroy. Death and Legacy
Margaret died before October 14, 1669 at Rappahannock County, Virginia.[1] This is the date her 3rd husband, Captain Thomas Lucas, made his will, without mention of her.[3]
Margaret was well documented as having three husbands and she was referred to many times as the widow of Underwood. The Will, of Margaret Underwood's second husband Captain John Upton was probated Dec. 16, 1652, sheds a lot more light on who were her children. John Upton was very generous to all the children involved: his one child John Upton and Margaret's children.[7]
Page 101, Virginia Families:
Capt. John Upton in his will, prob. Isle of Wight County, Dec. 16, 1652, left his land on the north side of Rappahannock River to his stepdaughters Elizabeth, Sarah, and Margaret Underwood, and Anne Underwood, now the wife of Mr. James Williamson. Also gave them 1,500 acres in Isle of Wight County, and likewise 850 acres if his son John Upton died before he reached the age of twenty-one years.

And I also hereby desire and make my Loveing friends Major George Fowden, William Underwood and James Taylor Clerk, my overseers, desiring them to see this my will performed. Likewise I give and ordain my Executrix to give each of my overseers a ring of Twenty shillings sterling price.
I give unto Elizabeth Underwood one pillion and pillion cloth to be delivered at her day of marriage.
Page 603, Virginia Familes:
The year of the making (Will) is not of record but when Margaret Upton made a deed conveying land to John Butcher dated 3rd February 1651 she styles herself as WIDOW of Capt. John Upton (Transcribed records, page 40).
The Underwoods seem to have gone to Rappahannock River country about the year 1655 or 1656 since Margaret Upton the mother of them sold her last lands 8 March 1655 to her son in law Francis Slaughter. (Transcribed rec. 62).

On April 10th 1657, we find a MARRIAGE AGREEMENT (pre-marital agreement) between Captain Thomas Lucas the Elder of Rappahannock in Virginia Gentleman, ...and Margaret Upton late wife of Capt. John Upton deceased...but if the said Margaret Upton shall happen to survive...the said Col. More Fauntleroy and Capt. William Underwood and their heirs and administrator that all of the said estate shall return to her and said Margaret Upton. ...The sons of the said Lucas are not to be disturbed on the land on which they shall be seated.
The bond was for the sum of 12,000 pounds of tobacco executed to Col. More Fantleroy and William Underwood. (Vol. 1656-64, page 33, Rappahannock County, now Richmond)

My sister did extensive research several years ago, and recorded the surname Roberts for Margaret who married William Underwood. According to her research, Margaret's parents were John Roberts (Oct 10, 1571 Kent, England - Feb 20, 1626/27 Kent) and Frances James (c. 1570 England - c. 1648), daughter of Martyn James. John was son of Walter Roberts and Mary Frances Maynard.
I don't know her sources, but she seemed fairly certain of it at that time. William and Margaret's daughter Elizabeth married Capt. Francis Slaughter (c. 1630-c. 1656) in Essex Co, Virginia, about 1652. After only 4 years of marriage, Francis died. Elizabeth married twice more, to John Catlett IV (1622 England-1670 Virginia), then to Mr. Butler. We are directly descended from Elizabeth and both husbands, through her sons Francis Slaughter II and John Catlett V.
The LNAB for Margaret, wife of Wm Underwood, cannot be proven. She was likely married in England, but died in Virginia. Unknown-334858 is detailed and sourced. Should merge.
Mason-3394 and Unknown-334858 appear to represent the same person because: The LNAB for Margaret, wife of Wm Underwood, cannot be proven. She was likely married in England, but died in Virginia. Unknown-334858 is detailed and sourced.
There is no daughter by the name of Margaret mentioned in the Will of f John Mason. Likewise he names grandchildren, but none with the surname Underwood.
Mason-3394 and Mason-5085 are not ready to be merged because: Changing this to an unmerged match. Apparently we do not have documentation of Margaret's maiden name. Please see http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?opGET&db:638441&id=I2313
Does anyone have any additional information?
Thanks!
