Disputed Origin

Wikitree Puritan Great Migration project states that the conclusions of (the author) Robert Charles Anderson are to be followed, unless more recent information indicates otherwise. Of Edward's wife Rebecca, Anderson has in his Comments for Edward Bangs: "Citing a supposed entry in the Hobart diary, Mary Walton Ferris suggested that Rebecca (Unknown) Bangs was Rebecca Hobart (1611-?), daughter of Edmund Hobart of Hingham, but this entry may not have existed, and the identity of Rebecca (____) Bangs remains unknown."[1]

Biography

Rebecca's parents, birth date, marriage date and death date are all guesses as the only known reference to Rebecca, the wife of Edward Bangs, is found in a deed of 22 June 1651.In 1651 Edward Bangs sold to Mannasses Kemton 40 acres for £13 "neare Brownes Rock...furthermore Rebeckah the Wife of the said Edward Banges doth...giue her free consent vnto the sale..." In that deed Edward Bangs is joined by his wife Rebecca in selling land in Plymouth to Manasses Kemton, to which "Rebeckah the said wife of Edward Banges" consented.[2]

About all that can be said concerning Rebecca is that she married Edward Bangs before 22 Jun. 1651, and therefore she was the mother of the twins born 15 Oct. 1651.

A birth date of "about 1615" is based on the assumption that the birth of Edward's oldest child, Joshua Bangs, was born about 1637 (which itself is a guess) and that Joshua was indeed Rebecca's child. If Joshua was born about 1637 and was Rebecca's child, then Rebecca's birth was probably sometime before 1617 and was probably in England.

She apparently died prior to 19 Oct. 1677, as Edward Bangs' will was dated October 19, 1677, which mentions children and grandchildren but does not mention a spouse.[3][4]

In the book Bangs Family in England, by Gay E. Bangs, published in 1914, on page 5 is a single page of Bangs family in America. It shows Edward Bangs first wife was Lydia Hicks, daughter. of Robert Hicks. Edward married second to Rebecca Hobart, daughter. of Edmond Hobart. The book is available to read online, or download as a PDF file from archive.org

The book is only about 25 pages, and is very hard to see, but has all of Edwards 10 children, and their marriages.
