Biography

Martha was likely the first wife of Drury Stith. Her birth name is unknown. She was recorded in a Lunenburg County land transfer dated 5 February 1746 when Drury Stith, Gent. & his wife, Martha, of St. Andrew's Parish of Brunswick County, made an indenture to Robert Jones, of Albemarle Parish of Surry County, for a 556 tract of land in Cumberland Parish of Lunenburg County formerly granted to said Stith's father, Drury Stith, Gent., September 27, 1729. [1]

Martha was again recorded in April of 1756 in the Vestry Book for St. Andrew's Parish of Brunswick County when it was ordered the parish pay Martha Stith for "making two surpluses."[2]

A pre-nuptial contract for the marriage of Drury Stith to Elizabeth Eldridge, widow of Thomas Eldridge, was written the 25th of December in 1762 and proved 28 March, 1763 in Brunswick Court, indicating his wife Martha was no longer living (Brunswick County Deed Book 7, pp. 159 & 160).

Research Notes

Last name at birth possibly Bolling or Edmund.[citation needed]

See note on Stith-5 about two Bolling/Stith marriages more than a century apart.

Maybe Kennon.[3]

Could be Jones.[citation needed]

Martha Stith being family to Elizabeth or Thomas Eldridge may be evidenced by an unknown possible "Margaret Stith" named Godmother of the eldest child of Thomas Eldridge and Elizabeth Jones Eldridge-Stith but "Martha" does not appear to have been a nickname used for Margaret: Aristotle Eldridge b. 10 Oct 1751. Found in: AN INTIMATE STUDY OF THOMAS ELDRIDGE, JUNIOR AND SENIOR By William D. Hall, M.D. Selma, Alabama (Part 3 of 8).

"TAKEN FROM ALBEMARLE PARISH REGISTER ANNOTATED TO SHOW RELATIONSHIPS OF GOD-PARENTS Aristotle, son of Tho. Eldridge and his wife Elizabeth, b. 10, 30, 1751, bap. 1, 29, 1752. God-parents: Xtopher Mason, Wm. Willie and Margaret St... Christopher Mason was a friend, William Willie was the Rector of the Parish, and Margaret St... [4]

Drury Stith married Elizabeth Buckner, and a plethera of related, co-located, similar-aged descendants named Drury and Buckner ensued. Also:

  • an Elizabeth Jones married a Drury Stith (b 1718), as his second wife.[5]
  • an Elizabeth Jones married a Buckner Stith (b 1752), as his first wife.[6]
The Buckner Stith born 1752 who married Elizabeth Jones (as his first wife) is the son of Buckner (b 1722),[6] who was the son of Drury (b 1695) and Elizabeth.
The Buckner Stith born 1739/40 who married Ann Dade is the son of Drury Stith (born c1718), brother of Buckner Stith (b 1722).
Drury Stith, born c1718, married (first) Martha ____, (second) Elizabeth Jones, widow of Thomas Eldridge.[5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Martha by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Martha:

Jones-1722 and Unknown-361746 appear to represent the same person because: these are clearly duplicates. If no evidence has been found in several years/decades as to her maiden name, it should be set as Unknown and a note can be placed in the bio that she may have been a Jones. (What is the source for her possibly being a Jones?)
The only hint I've found of Jones is the 1746 land transfer to Robert Jones which I have in her bio. section. I dug up Col. Robert Jones' will and he named a daughter Margaret (no profile). Even with the possibility she became the "Margaret St..." transcribed from the Baptism of Aristotle Eldridge, Martha is a given name and does not appear to have ever been a "recognized" nickname for Margaret. The Jones name was from a 2010 Pioneer Stock.GED upload and probably conflated information from the two wives of this Drury Stith (at that time thought to be his father). I created this Martha-Unknown 4 years ago and it would be good to have her 3 identified children attached. The Katherine currently attached to Drury is her sister-in-law (notes on that profile). Drury & Elizabeth's daughter Katherine was a child when they died. A 1788 accounting of Drury's estate (and per Elizabeth's will) show their children Charlotte & Katherine "Katy" Stith as "boarding" in the home of Capt. John Coleman (pd. in 1775). Thanks Honi. So... Should I remove PPP from Jones-1722 so that it can be merged away into this Unknown profile? (and edit the notes about PPP being in place so that this profile and Jones-1722 won't be merged)

Sorry if I misunderstood what was happening 4 years ago!

Cheers, Liz

Yes please. I think it is the right thing to do with the hopes we'll find a source one day. I think there was much confusion going on at that point trying to separate father from son so no worries. I'm confident we have enough sourcing to at least prove which children belonged to which mother and would like to wrap these up. Thanks Liz, I really appreciate you!

Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for all you do! Since you're a manager of this profile & the Jones profile is no longer PPP, you should be able to attach profiles for children as needed & complete the merge when it's approved (or 30 days, whichever comes first).

Cheers, Liz

I've added you as a manger of Elizabeth Jones's profile too... that should do it. Let me know if there's something you need done that you can't because of PPP.

Thanks again!

A project needs to be added as PM in order for this to have PPP.
