Biography

Volga German
Margaretha (Unknown) Just is a Volga German.
Margaretha (Unknown) Just has German Roots.

Family #12 in the 1767 Stephan census.

Anna Margaretha was born about 1746, probably in the Isenburg area, based on where she lived prior to leaving Germany and immigrating to Russia. According to the Kulberg Reports, she and her husband Conrad were already married when they embarked on their journey. [1] At the time, she was only 20 years old and he was 23. They ended up settling in Stephan, where they were the only Just/Jost family. [2]

Anna Margaretha most likely died while giving birth to her daughter Anna Cunegunde or shortly thereafter. Her widower husband Conrad, now with an infant to care for, quickly married second wife Anna Maria Schmidt by late 1769. Conrad and Anna Maria had their first child in 1770, and their second in 1774. Conrad, Anna Maria, Anna Cunegunde, Johann Konrad, and Johann Balthasar Jost should all appear in the 1775 Stephan census, of which I do not have a copy to confirm.

Conrad Just passed away before 1778 and his widow Anna Maria soon married Johannes Balzer.

Anna Margaretha's daughter Anna Cunegunde Just would have spent more than 10 years living with her stepmother Anna Maria Schmidt, including time after the death of her father. Stepfather Johannes Balzer was originally from Grimm but moved to Stephan in the late 1770s to marry Anna Maria Schmidt. He may have played a role in helping his step-daughter meet her future husband, Michael Lipp (#108), who lived just three houses away from her stepfather's brother, Andreas Balzer (#111), and his family.
